The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet, while this is true there is more to a blue whale than the eye can see. A blue whale eats about 40,000,000 krill a day! That’s a lot of krill. The blue whale is so big, but it eats very small food. It eats very small food because it’s throat is only about 2 inches wide. There are special plates in a blue whale’s mouth, called baleen, that help so that the whale doesn’t swallow the water, it will only swallow the krill. These plates are made of keratin. The blue whale is also the loudest animal on the planet. The sounds that blue whales make come in such low frequencies that humans aren’t able to hear them. Even though we can’t hear blue whales, that doesn’t mean that other whales can’t hear them. A blue whale can hear another from up to 1,000 miles away! A blue whale makes sounds in the water, but it also needs a bit of what’s above. A blue whale is a mammal, so it has lungs to breath. Although blue whales breath air, they can’t live on land. This mammal lives in water because water has buoyancy. If a blue whale lived on land the pressure would cause its body to collapse. A blue whale is an amazing creature.
